What we are required to keep, and why
South African law requires us to keep certain records even after an account is deleted:
- Financial and transaction records — invoices, payments, refunds and payout records — are retained for five (5) years after account closure, as required by section 23(1) of the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, 38 of 2001.
- Ban-enforcement identifiers — if an account is closed following a serious breach of our Terms of Use, we retain a limited set of identifying details indefinitely, for the sole purpose of preventing that person from re-registering. This is done to protect other users.
- Your email address — when an account is deleted, we add the email address to a suppression list and retain it indefinitely. This prevents the account from being re-created, stops us from contacting you again in error, and supports enforcement where an account was closed for a breach of our Terms of Use. It is not used for marketing.
These retained records are not used for marketing, and are not shared other than as described in our Privacy Policy.
